Witnessing the downfall of one’s own country in real time is a humbling and humiliating experience but it is nothing short of expected. Although I love the individuals in this country, although I want to continue to push for the prosperity of all within these borders so they may pursue their own definitions of happiness, America has obviously fallen short of the paradoxical freedoms it claims ownership of since its very inception. America has done, and continues to do, virulently evil, repugnant crimes against the concept of humanity itself. This is no condemnation of her citizens, whom I wish to preserve life and liberty for, but, instead, this is critical of the militaristically oligarchical government claiming sovereignty over them. This is no deep revelation. This is not a profound political analysis. These suffocatingly banal statements and their flaccid condemnations that could be applied to virtually any American historical event are perhaps the most uninteresting words I have ever written. Still, though, writing these words down feels important, impactful, and cathartic.
America, whatever it was and whatever it claimed to be previously, is no more. Our dictator has declared the spirit of our country moot, an act which will surely be hard for many Americans to swallow (assuming they see the actions at all). However, to much of the world outside of our bubble, these actions are just another example of state violence we routinely perform. The very foundational pillars propping up this state, however weak they may be, are beginning to crumble under the overwhelming ego and cruelty of our dictator. His actions have been nothing short of declaring militaristic violence against his own people, and, yet, the resistance against him is so minute that most of the politically uninterested individuals would be wholly unaware of it.
The parody of a left wing party that has been propped up to stand against the invasion of fascism have done naught but hold the door open for it. At this point, the “opposition” party is either indifferent to the inhumane kidnappings of our dictator or they tacitly support it. Whichever category they fall in, they will be remembered either as sniveling cowards with nothing more than an upturned nose at genocide and kidnappings or they will be remembered as horrific onlookers, lapping like starved dogs at the innocence of shed blood as it seeps into the earth.
Concentration camps. Genocide. Kidnappings. Suppression of speech. Suppression of thought. All belong to a group of right wing, disgusting creatures whose most fervent members would be the most unrealistic fanatics in a hollywood dreamed doomsday cult. All belong to the group that is supposed to stand against fascism, a group that is supposed to defend their people against this evil but do nothing while allowing this wound to fester till the entire branch is gangrenous and the trunk is hollowed from within. No one is blameless here. Those who stay silent should be remembered alongside those who cheered.
Speak up. Speak loud. Stand tall. Stand together. Stand proud.
